Period 1:

Zach: "A flurry of wind made the palms talk and the noise seem very loud now that darkenss and silence made it so noticeable. Two grey trunks rubbed each other with an evil speaking that no one had noticed by day." (90) -- compares to page 12: talking about the lagoon/pool of water: light/dark, good/evil, night/day

Nicole: "Simon became inarticulate to express mankind's central illness." (89)
  • Wes: maybe the terror is in themselves? does it give themselves permission (since there are no adults) to do things that they wouldn't otherwise do?
  • Zach: since Simon is in his 'place', he can observe (like an adult).
  • Alison: does it have to do with Simon's theory (it is just "us")

Elizabeth: "I mean -- but I know there isn't no fear, either" (Simon, 84).
  • Zach: just like Simon, he's outside the circle; adds: "Unless we get frightened of people" (84) jumps to (93) with Piggy talking about being afraid of Jack: "He hates you too, Ralph" (93)
  • Elizabeth asks: "Is Jack the beast?"
  • Carissa: "Is the beast different for everyone?" and "Is Simon Jesus?" (refers to pg 103: "However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of human at once heroic and sick")
  • Zach: the beast is the collective group that is falling apart; Jack is the reason that the group is falling apart; for Ralph, losing authority/power is the beast.
  • Calvin: Jack is inspiring the fear inside everyone and thus 'is' the beast; adds (pg 85) "I was asleep when the twisty things were fighting" and the twins: saw the beast.
  • Paige: all the boys are beasts to themselves; easy to get scared; easy to be persuaded

Mr. Long: What are they really hunting??? (he smiles, proudly, as he thinks about this period's conversation today -- well done!)

Tad: 102 argument b/w Jack and Ralph: "This is a hunter's job." -- is Jack going to rebel and take over?
  • Alex adds: 108: "Mutinously, the boys fell silent or muttering."

Sean: beginning of ch 6 seems to focus on S-n-E only, at the fire; almost in the same mind-set; a single symbiotic being. pg 100: "By custom now one conch did for both twins, for their substantial unity was recognized." 103 "a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain-top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric." Will the tribe itself be one being? One mindset?
  • Roxy: seems that everyone is becoming insignificant; people are being left out; twins becoming one person; identities are being lost or made insignificant
  • Mallory: Jack: we know who should be talking, making decisions
  • Michael: first time that everyone must 'learn' their place
  • Roxy: obviously done with the 'old' world; cutting those ties; in their own world everyone matters/has feelings...but now that's not important; have to leave Piggy out because his intelligence is a threat; Ralph is being left out (b/c Jack hates him, too)

Roxy: 93 "I tell you what. He hates you too."
  • Michael: Ralph is beginning to think, becoming like Piggy; up until that point everyone was fine with Ralph as the leader before he really began to enforce things
  • Roxy: Piggy forces Ralph to figure out what Jack is about
  • Natalie: first time that Ralph is really listening to Piggy; everyone (R, P, S) becoming outcasts

Sarah: "Only, decided Ralph as he faced the chief's seat, I can't think. Not like Piggy" -- Ralph is freezing, needs Piggy; Piggy needs Ralph's authority and Ralph needs Piggy's wisdom.
  • Alex: if you put Jack, Ralph and Piggy together, you get a perfect combo of manipulation/power, charisma/democracy, and wisdom/scientific thinking

(gulp -- Mr. Long accidentally deleted what followed; he'll try to point to 3 things that were roughly discussed)

Kellen: pg 93: "But a sign came down from the world of grown-ups, though at the time there was no child awake to read it."
  • Natalie: points out the fact that it was a soldier (war in the real world) and that the boys started innocent but seem now corrupt; their civilization (like the real world) is breaking down)

Finally: questions about Jack being 'the beast' were asked.

Here were the full list of quotes/questions that Per 2 put on the board:

Per 3

Feyi: "I've been alone. By myself I went, thinking what's what. I know what we need. An assembly to put things straight." (93)
  • Julie: gives the reader hope b/c everything is falling apart on the island; Ralph is changing, taking the role of leadership.

Katie: 93 "If Jack was chief he'd have all hunting and no fire. We'd be here till we died."
  • Shelby: Piggy is scared to stand up to Jack; Piggy was being logical, but seems a bit confused when he has to come up with something.
  • Katie: predicting that Ralph will depend on Piggy, vice versa -- come together: Both have good points, but alone they aren't enough to overpower Jack
  • Trae: even if Ralph/Piggy work together, not enough to overrule Jack...all the boys on the island are becoming like Jack; Jack will become the leader on the island; eventually if Jack becomes the leader it will lead to the destruction of the island
  • Ani: first time that Ralph/Piggy become friends because of Jack
  • Garrett: what all the boys don't realize is that they need both fire and hunting
  • Sarah: if Jack was the chief, he would only have hunting: death, destruction of life; fire is the hope (of rescue)
  • Omar: fire -- Jack is only using the fire to cook the meat
  • Shelby: destruction on the island, we need to focus on Simon. Pg 93: "You shut up, young Simon. Why couldn't you say there wasn't a beast?"
  • Grace: Simon is important to all the boys (old and young)

Mr. Long: Why is Ralph so angry that Simon did NOT say "there was no beast"?
  • Shelby: when Simon speaks, people listen; he rarely speaks, so it must be unique/important
  • Maddy: Simon is the link b/w Ralph and Jack; he's neutral; never thinks about himself; always focused on everyone else; not trying to get power
  • Omar: if he said that (re: the beast), everyone would believe him
  • Julie: Ralph is placing blame on Simon b/c he doesn't know how to act himself; lashes out on Simon; Simon is heard more -- he's one of the kids
  • Sarah: respect Simon b/c he does things that they want to do, but are scared to do (like when he faints, gives meat to Piggy, etc).
  • Ani: 89: "What's the dirtiest thing there is" "Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind's esential illness. Inspiration came to him."

Mr. Long suggest you take a look at the following lines...and see what Golding is beginning to introduce you to:
  • "What I mean is...maybe it's only us." -- Simon (89)
  • Piggy's line about "Life is scientific, that's what it is....Unless we get frightened of people." (84)
  • "But a sign came down from the world of grownups, though at the time there was no child awake to read it." (95)

Finally: what is the beast? (Mr. Long smiles)
