“They walked along, two continents of experience and feeling, unable to communicate…They looked at each other, baffled, in love and hate,” this foreshadows the beginning of the end of the group’s unity. Jack and Ralph being to realize their different goals; Ralph is interested in building the shelters while Jack is interested in killing the pig. Although they have different goals, they come to agree on a few things. “The rub of feeling” describes the rub of tension between the two. “All the warm salt water of the bathing pool….. [Was] only sufficient to bring them together again,” the clear water allows them to come together, their both stranded on an island and their main goal is to get home. Jack and Ralph’s differences are more harmful, rather then helpful. If they work together as a team it would be more beneficial. The group’s unity was becoming more divided because of the rigidity between the leaders.
